Conclusion

If we model appropriate delivery and technology use during digital read-aloud, will participants follow that example? We can’t be sure, but leading participants to view technology use and quality literature as hand-in-hand companions is a positive. Combining the positive aspects of the knowledge supporting traditional read-aloud with the digital read-aloud experience can bring heightened engagement to our digital natives. Does this engagement equal learning? It has potential. Deliberate material selections that require text quality with supportive technologies can help.

Quality narration and appropriate dictionary functions (text-embedded definition assistance) could both be considered positive for digital read-aloud.

Content-connected animations can add to student comprehension of the story and add to positive reader experience.

Students may not feel the need to turn paper pages or engage in reading in the same way as their parents (Roslund 2012).
